Contributions to KJC project wk 10 blog

My contributions to the KJC project involved contacting and liaising with the band ‘Flora Link’ and within our group. This role involved finding suitable times for everyone to record and making sure everything was clear when communicating and making sure everyone was happy with situations.

Roles I did other than that involved creating equipment list and choosing microphones and recording techniques for mic placement.

Everyone went through these roles at different stages in the production as there were multiple sessions.

I kind of went through lots of different roles as I’m sure everyone in the group did. These roles were pro tools operator, head engineer, assistant engineer, patch engineer, artist relations, a little bit of producing help i.e. suggesting harmonies to be introduced, changing hi hat patterns.

The main issue we had was that our Pro tools session had created negative bars and because we were very unfamiliar with this happening we continued to record and since then we have fixed the problem but it wasn’t ideal.

Other issues within the production group were varying skill levels so when trying to communicate doing Phase checks on guitar amps and bass amps it took longer than expected. Same for drum miking making sure that the kick and snare in the OH was in centre and the other mics were in phase took longer than usual.

This was mainly because one of the group members wasn’t familiar with the process and the other wasn’t there for one session.

And the other time one person came in late.

It didn’t cause any problems because we planned for extra time in case we needed to trouble shoot any problems like situations like these.

The main thing in this situation was communicating very clear and making sure the other person knew what to do.

We got through it all as a team with no stress and we did it with no major issues.

In the future it might be wise to have a practice session with everyone in the group to make sure everyone knows how to do everything and the terminology that is needed to communicate effectively.

I am really use to being on the console and pro tools so I decided to be on the other end with this project and by doing this I’m sure everyone in the team learned more.
